Great story Doug - as always. Just out of curiosity - did anyone ever import the 288GTO? Twin turbo V8 IIRC ? I'll bet it screamed. Of course, I'm a huge 959 fan - the ultimate Porsche - but you can have a similar car in the newer 911 AWD Turbo. Same concept with different tactics for reaching the conclusion....

IMO The 288 would have been a sleeper - many people would have called it a "Magnum Ferrari" which it is similar to - but beneath those wide fender flairs and additional scoops and aero aides is a whole nuther ball game. I wish I could hear those twin turbos spool up in anger (in person) - I'll bet it's not something that is soon forgotten.

Later ya'll -

Ahhhh - the notorious Porsche 959. Yesh. NO ONE - save a few in the USofA
could have their car in states. Not even Bill Gates. Those that were
owned, or rather bought, were stuck on the docks - until recently.

A few years ago, at a Concours, I got to judge Otis Chandler's 959. A red
one. I had the trunk area. Cheese and crackers - what to look for? Hmmm,
dirt someplace. Ahhhhh - the tool roll cover - a long carbon fiber cover
held by two Tenex fasteners. As I pulled up on one ear - the corner breaks
away - - - - AYIEEEE - hey, wait, its glued ?! Say, Mr. Chandler (me
holding the piece of this irreplaceable part in the air) this - - - - - He
exclaims - NO POINTS OFF - no points off - THAT happened at the factory. Oh
sez I.

Otis is gone, his car is sold, and 959's can be had now. More of a car that
was to race the 288 GTO than the F40.

Onward

Thank God for some real F and car content!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am reading Steve Matchett's "A Mechanic's Tale" and he mentioned how he
thought of the F40 as the ultimate roadgoing achievement.

I look at the 599 and then back at the F40 and I want to wake myself up
from this sweaty nightmare!

Battle at Fiorano!

I might have posted this awhile ago but somebody reminded me of the 959
today and this had to be brought back:

http://www.autozine.org/959/959_9.htm

You gotta give it up to Porsche for having the balls to go into the
visiting
team's stadium outgunned and giving it a shot...

I know Lamborghini is considered the more natural rival, but back in the
late '80s nothing epitomized the supercar battle to me as much as these
two
going at it.

*"At Fiorano, the 959 is at least 10 secs behind the F40," Gerhard Berger
said - and even 959 owner Walter Brun would admit to six.*
