Gez George, reading about your nuts turning cherry red made me cringe!

BTW, did you replace them? I seem to recall a recommendation about replacing the half-shaft fasteners after each use. I believe stretching & weakening the threads is the reason for replacement.

Some may recall that, some time ago, I missed a shift and found out the
hard way that they person who installed new timing belts when I purchased
the car had failed to properly tension the 5-8 belt. It slipped a few teeth
and the exhaust valves kissed the piston crowns bending the exhaust valves
just enough that they wouldn't seat. I pulled the engine and replaced the
valves, timing belts, hoses etc. . While I had the engine out I also did some
cosmetic things including painting the cam covers and the plenum with
red crinkle-finish . The engine went back in and she is back on the road. Aside from
the usual compression tests, she passed the "right-foot" test. Last week
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where I work, hosted a Vintage Car Show. I
brought Baby in and she was a real hit. The other cars there were mostly
American Muscle cars my 308 GTSi really stood out. Pictures are at the end of this thread:
