Wow, F1 without Ferrari is like Porsche without the 911....what's left!?FG
EDITORIALF1 has always been a development series. When Ferrari won, it was due in part to the driver, but also very much to the superiority of that manufacturer's car on that particular day. And luck, of course. And strategy, but first there was the car.
NASCAR, in contrast, has evolved from a race between what were almost literally "stock' cars to a contest between the "Number 2 Car" and the "Number 12 Car". Aside from (very) superficial cosmetics, today's NASCAR Cars Of Tomorrow are identical. NASCAR has become a cult of driver worship. If the drivers were anonymous, who would give a rat's ass if the blue car won or the red car won?
Bernie and his whipping boy, Max Mosley, concern themselves only with spectacle. Tradition is out the window, ticket prices are in. And TV receipts. This weekend is to be the last race at Silverstone. Brawn is favored, but what are we to make of a White car with a Ferrari engine beating a Red car with a Ferrari engine? Must we root for a paint color?
Why is racing on some remote circuit in a sand-blown desert camel park where the major hazard is avoiding the dust and lizard turds on the track somehow more engaging than honoring 50 or 60 years of tradition by running on those hallowed tracks of yore. Tracks that reek with history? Let's rebuild the fabled Parabolica curve at Monza! Cut out the chicanes. Hey Ferrari: I have two words for your future success - Long Beach.
F1 without Ferrari is like Madonna without an African baby, ripped untimely from it's mother's home. Just an old lady. But Ferrari, McClaren, Renault etc without Bernie Ecclestone - THAT could be something! My advice - stage the opener at the Nürburgring - the same long route that Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx drove.
