Hi Tom,
Just like there are all kinds of resume techniques, there are just as many managers to read them - each with their own idea of what they want to see.

So what you will see from me and others are opinions - some of us have been in the business of screening resumes - I did it for a while but not regularily and what I liked to see was a cover letter explaining what you hoped to do and a general scope of background - like "20 years in the newspaper business writing copy" or something.

Then on the resume I'd give name, address and phone (on each page) - then list education followed by experience - but I'd only look at the last 5-10 years - past that just list the companies and titles but no dates or responsiilities unless it can be broadbrush. I've seen some than go back to the job they had when they left high school and listed all the duties they had at Burger King. It would have been enuf to say "Fast Food Business" experience or leave it out all together.

Mostly, gloss over the stuff that doesn't help you get *this* specific job - and detail the stuff that *will* help. Also, do a specific resume and cover letter for each job posting you respond to. When sending them out blind try to generalize and no colored paper or photographs. ;-)

I know you probably know most of this stuff - but maybe I'll hit on something that will help.

Best wishes - and good luck -
LarryT

Subject: [Ferrari] NFC: Who's really good at critiquing resumes?

I have a couple versions of my resume, and I do need to update it to include my latest job at the Tulsa World. But, the help I need now from you is to find someone or a few people who have (or have recently had) day to day experience looking at and/or evaluating resumes. What should I include? How much detail should I provide? Do I need to give dates (which age me) or do I just need to provide the jobs I've had in order without dating them (and me.)?
Anyone want to play guinea pig/mentor/helpful lister?
:)

Thanks very much again.
Kind regards,
Tom Reynolds
