The main differnce between a router and a switch is kind of confusing - that 
said without going in to much detail (read I don't want to have to dig out 
my networking manuals):
                                                                     PC
web(cloud) - cable/satelite modem - router < PC
                                                                    PC
                                                                    PC

           VS
                                                                        PC
web(cloud) -cable/satelite modem -PC switch <PC
                                                                        PC

Notice there are 4 PC's in both examples in the router the ONLY PC that has 
to be turned ON is the one you are using
all PC's after the switch depends on the PC between the modem and the switch 
to be ON plus the one you are using
