The main differnce between a router and a switch is kind of confusing - that said without going in to much detail (read I don't want to have to dig out my networking manuals):PC web(cloud) - cable/satelite modem - router < PC PC PC VS PC web(cloud) -cable/satelite modem -PC switch <PC PCNotice there are 4 PC's in both examples in the router the ONLY PC that has to be turned ON is the one you are using all PC's after the switch depends on the PC between the modem and the switch to be ON plus the one you are usingStephen----- Original Message ----- From: "LarryT" <l02turner [at] comcast.net>To: "Stephen" <sherman [at] wildblue.net> Cc: "The FerrariList" <ferrari [at] ferrarilist.com> Sent: Saturday, October 17, 2009 3:48 PM Subject: [Ferrari] Computer Question OT - NFC - OTHi Gang -I bought a 5 port switch a few years ago that I was never able to use. Came across it yesterday and looked at the instructions for hooking it up. It says to attach a cable modem to the switch but that won't work without a router - which I found out when I tried to use it like that ;-( So I bought a router and once connected to the cable modem I was in business. I attached my laptop and desktop to it and have been working like that since. But I keep wondering about the switch. When is it used? Could I connect it after the router to give myself additional ports? Can I hook anything other than computers to the switch? I'm thinking things like printers and ext HDs.Sorry to bother everyone with this - Thx - LarryT Does your business accept or need to accept V/MC/AE/Dis?
