If your current motor is basically toast, which mine was, a 328 motor drops
straight onto the 308 transaxle/gearbox - no problems. That's what I did for
my 308, now 328gt4. I bought a stock 328 motor of modest mileage and then I
got rid of the mechanical fuel injection and put in sequential EFI, modified
the ignition and set all this up through a MoTec ECU system. Yes, it did
require installing some sensors for timing, etcetera. And yes, it took a
couple of hours on the dyno, but now the tuning is all mapped out right
through the rev range for different loads, etcetera. It is very tractable
low down and yet has more urge than a standard 328 motor right through to
7,000 rpm or so - smooth as silk. And, being in a relatively light gt4 body,
the car goes quite well, really.

If your motor is basically ok but just needs freshening up, then first
ensure you do not have sodium-filled exhaust valves. If you do, get rid of
these immediately and replace with stainless steel. Some of the guys on
F-chat have documented flowing the heads for more efficiency; one guy is a
huge advocate of carbies as giving the "true" experience, and has converted
a 328 to carbies.

Then maybe go for the higher compression pistons and more aggressive cams
and whatever. Others have gone the supercharger route. If you are thinking
of forced induction, my impression is that you would be better to stick to
stock pistons and cams.

As for weight, without going nuts, yes, ditch the air conditioning - I did -
but it ain't so pleasant on a hot day. Get rid of the back seat if it's a
gt4 - would save a few pounds but would not be so pretty. Go for lighter
wheels if you can find some (e.g. custom Panasports) and go for lighter
weight brakes (e.g. the 308 GiroDisc big brake upgrade kit) - all this
reduces unsprung weight which is a good thing.

Just my 2cents worth...

Cheers,

Grahame

The yellow one?

If so, I recall that car. Tony Shaneen's ride. Fast and fun.
