For 5 or 6 years running, I was privileged to be a guest of Steve Earle at the Monterey Historics - In the private grandstand - with tables to gnosh down your lamb chops and fixins' and ever fine wine, of course, was some REAL moneyed people. Never knew how much or who they were - but they were there. Very hospitable, well groomed (uh, not like Michael Andretti's first wife) and tasteful. Patient - listened well even to prattle and spoke softly and with purpose. Made me want to copy down what they said.

Ach, (as Bubba sez) those were the years - - - now the Monterey Historics are at Sears Point - in June. OK. Still should be fun. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Erik Nielsen" <judge4re [at] gmail.com>

Ever notice at Cavallino/Pebble Beach that it is generally pretty easy
to figure out who is on their first marriage?

Maybe so,

I have a very good friend from high school who falls into that category,
last I checked his families net worth was ~3.9 billion, and last time I
saw him he had a Timex (last summer). Drives a Mercedes ML, which is
quite upscale from the Jeep he used to drive, but he has a couple of
kids now. So I agree some of the very rich, I won't get... But I like
to think its not because they are very rich but how they were raised
that makes the difference.

Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and
me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes
them soft, where we are hard, cynical where we are trustful, in a way
that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand.

Ah man it looked nice and I got it with about 4 other watches, I don't
even
wear a watch unless I go out all fancy, and that almost never happens

Besides who would even recognize a Patek Phillipe? A Rolex sure...
Heck I
had no idea until after buying it and then I looked it up online...

But to answer your question... The guy who blew a million on a piece of
jewelry, clearly not as smart as the guy who saved $999,940.00 for
something
that might actually be useful.

So which is worse? The guy that bought the original for over a mil,
or the guy that paid $60 to look like the former?

Enzo money? Veyron money? You could live pretty large for that
watch...
Looks almost exactly like the one I got for $60...

That's not a typo, it's about 2 F40's in today's prices...

A lot of watches will hold their value much better than a Ferrari, and
won't break as often. So when it appreciates you can buy another
Ferrari, that has been depreciating!

Ah well,

I can get you several of those (at least close enough to fool most)...
I have one myself that I picked up in Shenzhen. Admittedly tougher to
bring these into Europe (I am told the fines are quite large). But it
wouldn't cost you a 308 either :)

But I have to say anyone who wants to trade their sports car in for a
watch (even if it were a Miata), is just not a car enthusiast. Sorry
Erik. I never will understand the "more money than sense watches"
any
more than I get the whole Vertu business model. I see the appeal of a
Ferrari, all of the ones I have driven have unique sounds and driving
persona that makes you want to push it a bit harder everytime you get
behind the wheel, and no question they look amazing just sitting
still,
but to exchange that experience for a piece of jewelry? Blasphemy I
say!

Mike
