I'll agree with you there, Brian.

My favorite scotch (currently) is $600 a bottle.

and if you came to my house and had a drink, you'd never know
that it wasn't $50 a bottle scotch.

If I hear "Wow, this is really good".

My reply is general "Yeah, I thought you might like it".

If you have to jump up and down and inform your guest that the
bottle you just polished off cost $X - what's the point?

Still looking for that genuine 1963 bottle of Macallan.

That's likely only $2,000 or so though.

(Folks, I can drive a Chevy if need be, but life is just too
damn short to drink cheap booze!)

I'm not sure I agree about people wanting to show off their
investments / acquisitions. How often do you see anyone walking down
the street with a Picasso, a box of $25,000 cigars or a $10,000
bottle
of champagne? Quite the opposite. They buy those items for
themselves. And they usually keep their purcases very quiet. Hence
all of the anonymous buyers at high end auctions of all types. The
items bought satisfy a totally different need other than flash and
recognition. And just has been pointed out - would the average person
even recognize a $75,000 watch, or a collectible piece of art?

Ah man it looked nice and I got it with about 4 other watches, I
don't
even wear a watch unless I go out all fancy, and that almost never
happens :). Besides who would even recognize a Patek Phillipe? A
Rolex
sure... Heck I had no idea until after buying it and then I looked
it
up online...

But to answer your question... The guy who blew a million on a
piece of
jewelry, clearly not as smart as the guy who saved $999,940.00 for
something that might actually be useful.

The world of high end watches is very fascinating to me as I do not
quite
understand it.

I understand the world of $upreme cars and $upreme audiophile sound
systems
very well, two drug habits that have no cure....and should have no
cure :)

But watches I find harder to get especially once you get past the
$10k mark
or so. The more "high end" the watch, often times the less flashy
and more
discreet (like Patek Phillipes). A friend of mine (former lister who
will
remain nameless!) told me he took off his buddy's $75k watch at a
bar and
realized he forgot to put it back on after he left. He came running
back
about 15-20 minutes afterwards and it was still there! He said if it
was a
$3k Rolex it would have been gone...lol.

I try to get into the mind of these guys....they really seem to be
into the
workings of the watch, the craftsmanship, some of the same things
some
Ferrari enthusiasts are into about Ferraris. To a certain point
that's fine
but when you get to serious money watches, I can't imagine you'd be
buying
them without some sense of wanting to show them off so at some point
that
has to come into play. And then it would be somewhat hypocritical
because
that's what their beef is against expensive Rolexes and Tag Heuers.

If you really have all the money in the world then maybe these are
worthy
acquisitions, but otherwise hard to rationalize, IMHO.
