I recall a program on History channel about the development of the Chronograph I think - evidently there were 2 super rich guys - people like Carneigie or Mellon who competed to see who could have the most complex watch made - using the # of dials as the way of counting the complication. So, over 5-10 years they each commissioned numerous watches each with more dials than the last - one finally won with 18 or 22 dials!

So they spent hundreds of thousand$ - maybe million$ *only* to beat the other guy - I'd bet neither wore any of the watches more than once. So as someone mentioned, it's not about buying a watch to check time, it's a competition. Granted, some merely collect because they love complex little devices (that would be me) and like to tinker with them - but never wear them.

I am sure that Ego and Competition are heavily involved when the very rich buy things - beating the other guy is a way of keeping score -

Having a great Ferrari or Porsche or ?? is similar, but guys like us on the list are more down to earth IMO - we're drivers more than collectors.

LarryT (who cannot keep score, doesn't have a scorecard and can't even afford the marker pen!) ;-)

2 thoughts, watches are like ferraris as they are fine example of machinery. I was given a watch catalog by a friend once and it had 30 pages and not one watch was below $400K.

I actually bought a couple of MOMO watches on ebay about 250 each. I like them as they go with my other stuff. I am sure if I had a bit more cash i would have more watches......

I have a very rare MOMO jacket that I wore to work once. Some of my staff thought it was funny and made an H just like the M stuck it on there and I walked around for about a week with it like that.
I even thought that was funny!

The very rich have so much money that after a while it is like a contest to see who can buy the most expensive things, I understand this feeling I just dont have the$$$! and if I did you guys
know what i would buy.... :-)

Oh yea I pulled through my heater hose, by myself, today, if anyone ever does this please read my write up on Fchat it was easy, once I screwed it up the first time!!! next vacuum hose, Did you know the nipples on the engine and the brake booster are different size, a real challenge to get this part right!!!

I still have not figured how to post pics here. FG just did the boxer is there some trick , every post i make with an attachment gets tossed????

Wasn't it Phil Hill, having been asked about how hard he was pushing a

it's worth fixing if it gets damaged.

And if you owned an $800,000 car you can honestly say you'd drive it
"places?". Like the grocery? Home Depot?

That's not a typo, it's about 2 F40's in today's prices...

Ah well,

I have one myself that I picked up in Shenzhen. Admittedly
tougher to
bring these into Europe (I am told the fines are quite large).
But it
wouldn't cost you a 308 either :)

But I have to say anyone who wants to trade their sports car in
for a
watch (even if it were a Miata), is just not a car enthusiast.
Sorry
Erik. I never will understand the "more money than sense
watches" any
more than I get the whole Vertu business model. I see the appeal
of a
Ferrari, all of the ones I have driven have unique sounds and
driving

get
behind the wheel, and no question they look amazing just sitting
still,
but to exchange that experience for a piece of jewelry?
Blasphemy I say!
