Amen! Whenever I watch a Historics race I feel the same way - those guys are really pushing their cars much of the time and sometimes it costs them Watched a video of a Tour de France when a Ferrari 250GT threw a gear through the transmission case. The owner didn't seem too upset - maybe he was hiding it maybe not - but his car when into a big trailer and his other race car was put into action.

I'd dearly love to drive something like Historics LeMans or Monaco - if I win a lottery you don't have to worry about me losing it all in a hedge fund scam - my money will be in high end cars, a 100 acre ranch with a 2000 sq ft house and a 30K sq ft garage (priorities). The cars may lose money as well. But I'll get Clyde to help me buy right ;-)

(Yep - I've been giving this some thought)

No no no...

I never said the Patek isn't valuable, just that its value is insane. I
also stated that if enough people are insane... then that is the norm
and they become the "sane" ones... Leaving me out :) I will be padding
my office next summer... But really I don't see it. And honestly, if I
asked the "man on the street", name the most expensive brand of watch
you can think of? How many would answer Patek? Try this at the local
Sonic in Indiana sometime... I'll be sure to ask next time I have
dinner in Lake Forest.

As for an 800k road car? Even if I could afford it, I would not own one
and your questions are probably just one of the reasons why not. I
can't fathom someone buying a car and parking it in a garage or museum.
I just can't. I really commend some of the guys on this list for
putting their high $$$ iron out on the track or just racking up the
miles... Dead things belong in museums :)

I can't even comprehend the idea of owning a $800K watch! At least
with a
*very* expensive car like a McL F1 or Ferrari F40 or 50 I'd have
something
that would take me places.

That's not a typo, it's about 2 F40's in today's prices...

A lot of watches will hold their value much better than a Ferrari,

Ah well,

I can get you several of those (at least close enough to fool
most)...
I have one myself that I picked up in Shenzhen. Admittedly
tougher to
bring these into Europe (I am told the fines are quite large).
But it
wouldn't cost you a 308 either :)

But I have to say anyone who wants to trade their sports car in
for a
watch (even if it were a Miata), is just not a car enthusiast.
Sorry
Erik. I never will understand the "more money than sense
watches" any
more than I get the whole Vertu business model. I see the appeal
of a
Ferrari, all of the ones I have driven have unique sounds and
driving
persona that makes you want to push it a bit harder everytime you
get
behind the wheel, and no question they look amazing just sitting
still,
but to exchange that experience for a piece of jewelry?
Blasphemy I say!
