Matt is on to something re the sounds. Did you ever see a little kid playing with Hot Wheels without vocalizing the appropriate engine noises? "Vrroooom! Nyyaaarrrrow!"I once had the distinct pleasure of witnessing the Union Pacific's well-preserved old steam train pulling out of Houston at full tilt, headed north for Dallas. What a rush! All the sturm und drang and thunder. People don't get priapic over Priuses, or diesel locomotives either. I haven't bought a Porsche since they gave up on the oil coolers; not by design , just lack of desire. I realize this is a highly personal thing, but I am just not very excited about the first Porsche equipped with a dashboard that glows green when you switch on the AA battery pack.Of course, as Chef Liu used to say before he began writing about couscous rather than cars, I could be perfectly wrong.the kenverine http://www.upsteam.com/ On Mar 3, 2010, at 12:02 AM, Doug and Terri Anderson wrote:The Raucous Sound of Silence? Indy once again played host to sounds of interesting engines.PPS - at the December 1968 Rex Mays race at Riverside International Raceway, near the last lap - Mario had jumped into Joe Leonard's STP 4WD Lotus wedge turbine (a complex set of rules in motion to garner the coveted Number 1 USAC number for next year) managed to T-Bone the only other STP turbine, driven by team mate Art Pollard, in ever so tight high speed 180 degree last turn at RIR. Thus endeth the turbine at Indy.Alas again----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt Boyd" <ferrari308driver [at] gmail.com>To: "DOUG" <dnt [at] dock.net>Cc: "Paul K Rentiers" <rentiers [at] mac.com>; "The FerrariList" <ferrari [at] ferrarilist.com>Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2010 4:02 PM Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Stunning New Porsche 918 Spyder - Another HybridI thought I read the 16 mile range is if you go fully electric, which typically wouldn't be the mode folks use -- but would be an additional option for short trips? Sounds pretty cool for a hybrid. The thing I'm most worried about in the future of electric cars is the sound(or lack thereof). I keep envisioning 15-20 years from now the differentseries of auto races, from F1 to Nascar, with silent cars. Do Tesla ownersput external speakers on their cars and hook up some sensor to the accelerator or somewhere so it can simulate "normal" sounds? -matt '85 308 On Tue, Mar 2, 2010 at 6:41 PM, Paul K Rentiers <rentiers [at] me.com> wrote:Cost, complexity, sixteen mile range.
