Re: Help, Testarossa won't start

One of my favorite Ferrari memories is riding around Dallas, TX with Ric Rainbolt in a TR he had just bought that needed a lot of TLC to get it back right. It had two issues -- it tended to stall at idle, and it didn't want to restart (had that clicking noise). Envision the beautiful red TR in stop and go traffic, then it stalls, and Matt gets out of the passenger seat with a hammer, opens the rear decklid and whacks on the starter and then Ric can start it back up.  :-)

Mauricio,

My 348ts had this same problem outside a diner in BFE Texas (after a long weekend at the track).

Turned out the wiring to the starter motor was not making a good connection, I called a mechanic I knew and he said to bang on it a bit with a breaker bar and try again, I followed his advice and it started right up, but the problem recurred a few more times later also until the wiring was replaced.  I always kept that breaker bar in the trunk from then onwards (probably why Ferrari ships the cars with a toolbox).

Pulling the starter out would have shown it worked fine also...

Your mileage may vary here, but the easiest things are best to be checked first with an F-car :).  I'd try that before pulling spark plugs and cranking the motor with a wrench.  Ground strap is a good thing to check also, the motor will not do much with a floating ground.  Good luck!

My 90 Testarossa was running fine. Left it at body shop for some paint work. Three month later they are going to start it and it just "clicks" but neither starter nor motor will turn. The shop then tries to charge battery with no result and they call me. I figure new battery and buy and put one in. Same click, click and nothing. I next think starter motor so I remove it and take it to the rebuilder who tells me it works perfectly on the bench. He also checks solenoid and is fine. Then I check all electrical connections in engine bay and everything is plugged in. All fluids including gas are topped. Nothing but a click, click sound with no result. All accessories, lights and bells work. (has radio delete from factory).
Does anyone out there please have any suggestions as to what I should check next or as to what the problem may be. I would be most grateful for any help. I am a halfway decent basic, backyard mechanic but the electrical stuff always stomps me. I am also afraid the workers may have burnt something out when they "repeatedly" tried to start it with an external charger.
Thanks,
