Personally I don't understand why you would want to modify a 328 at all.
Changing it changes the car and it is no longer a 328. If you want something
faster or more reliable than buy a different car, or build a kit car. I want my
cars in period. At the local FOC meeting at a local pub here in Telford Thursday
one guy brought his Daytona. Lots of cars are faster and nicer to drive than a
Daytona but to him its the car he wanted (he has owned it since 1983).
In terms of parts always being available for 328's they aren't over here.
Try to get a front fog lamp. Or a fuse box. Or almost any body panel (maybe you
can get used bits from scap cars but insurance companies over here wont fit used
parts to insurance repairs so you can't get them)
In 2001 almost everything was available. For my 400i in 2004 everything was
available until I stripped the marenello warehouse of the last factory bits for
use on my car! Parts are disappearing for 328s. Need an ECU? Forget it,. Of
course you may be able to use modern bits and re-engineer things but then the
car isn't original. Then it isn't a Ferrari, its a kit car. Over here in the UK
non original parts would DESTROY the resale value of the car. I wouldn't buy
anything that wasn't 100% as it left the factory. Not everybody feels this way
of course but I bet more people do than would admit....or maybe it an
American thing to modify so much....
Lastly on 328 values, a really really nice 88-89 328GTS here will fetch
about 35k so close to the 45-50k mark of Phils car. If I could move back to the
states tomorrow and the car was a very very good car I would pay 50k no problem.
For the right car who wants to mess around for a few thousand?
