I can see the problem. Also, the
shops/technicians who understand the problem are becoming fewer and fewer as the
years pass. Dealers are so focused on new cars that this kind of info is
totally in the hands of a few dedicated technicians who are willing to learn
(usually) as a apprentice of a true craftsman.
I've run across Chinese parts in the past - I
owned a MB parts/accessory store and some how very well counterfeited flywheel
bolts had gotten into the supply chain. After a number of failures the
problem was found and a large number of the bolts scrapped. (It may have
been clutch bolts - it's been a while)
The reality is it's extremely hard to tell the
difference between good counterfeits and the real deal. Even US Money is
not immune - I hear China and N Korea has the same machines we use to make money
with leaving only the paper as the hurdle.
Anyway - I guess Vandy stopped making 308
bearings because of slow sales?

It means that they're made in China and they're crap,
unfortunately. Been down this road already. What's sad
is this is probably what the 'Factory Sources' are now peddling as
legitimate 'Ferrari parts' for our cars. The unsuspecting, or the
unknowledgable might not know the difference, since we're talking 25 year
old engines and this knowledge was only known in the 1980s Service
bays. On some trivial plastic/trim items, it might not make a
difference - but for internal engine components, its life-or-death.
My mechanic wouldn't trust his reputation and my engine lifespan to
anything that doesn't meet original Factory Specs, so he hunts for the
Real Deal until he finds it and that's what he uses in his shop. We
found a set of OEM Vandy bearings - it took a few weeks, and they weren't
cheap, but who needs the headaches if an 'alternative-vendor' engine
bearing fails prematurely? How much money will we have saved
then?
I've bought Marelli parts from Superformance UK before - the closest
those items ever came to Italy was when the Chinese cargo plane flew OVER
it to get to the UK. What Superformance parts I did actually use
needed to be drilled/cut/shaped to fit (Cap rotors - how hard was it to
screw them up? Not that hard, apparently - the dimensions were off
and they didn't fit). The rest of the stuff I ditched on ebay.
It was all crap. The parts were 'affordable', but none of it was
OEM. There are interesting times ahead....

Found some main/rod bearings at http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-308/eg.htm that
say "manufactured to Vandervell spec" (whatever that means) and also
show some in Vandervell boxes - not sure what the quality is
though.

Once its gone, its GONE, folks!
My engine mechanic is already scouring the earth looking for
genuine Vandervelle Engine Bearings for 308 motors....the current
'crop' of aftermarket crap being passed-off as Ferrari parts these
days makes him very scared for the future of these machines.
LOTS of OEM suppliers of Ferrari parts have given-up the limited
market of Italian exotics support, and the only folks picking-up
the torch are the Chinese knock-off crowd who don't give two-shits
about the original Specs/dimensions/tolerances of the part they're
reproducing and offering today. If you think that's a good
thing, you might want to trade-in your 308 for a Honda
now.....

Michael,
I should have done that, too. When I bought new Euro front
lenses from Ferrari UK, I bought two pair. I put the second pair
on eBay with no reserve and selling that one pair almost paid
for both pair. And that was several years ago....

THREE THOUSAND
DOLLARS?
Yikes -
And here I was bitching about
dropping a grand on a real Bosch complete lens set
with silver trim for our '71 911T
restoration.
Seems if we buy a newer Ferrari
we also need to invest in "crunchables" such as
bumpers, light cans and lenses. Then, place them
in a Halliburton Zero 21" carbon fiber carry on and
place the whole mess in a cool dry place.
Thank God the Italia only has
two tail lights - THE reason to buy one.

Darn good thing as the only available
front driving lamps for the 512TR are for French
version cars or Euro version. A pair of them will
relieve you of a wee bit over $3k.
