Ferrari Mailing List: NFC: OK starting to look at buying another family hauler, opinions please?

So I currently use my 08 GTI as a family car.  Its a great little car, 
but its little and I hardly ever drive anymore unless I want to go on a 
roadtrip, then I take the fun car.  So next car will largely sit in the 
garage, be a grocery/kid getter, and of course will be my winter time car.

Looking to get something else.
4 doors
Used
Less than $20k
Fun to drive
Manual

Here is what I am thinking about:

1.  BMW M5 (E39) (2000 to 2003)
2.  Audi S4 (2004-2007)

Anyone have experience(s) with either of these two cars?  Maintenance 
needs for higher mileage examples?  Any scary "Stay the hell away" stories?
