Oops. Forgot to mention power curve shape.
Several years ago, an engineer type crunched the numbers
comparing a ZO6 Corvette to a F355. Both had about 400hp.
(390, I think, for the Ferrari?). Anyway, because of the huge
bottom end torque of the Corvette, it jumped ahead of the
Ferrari off the start. The gap then remained consistent down
the strip. So the terminal speed was the same for each, but
the Corvette got there a bit quicker. The guy simulated this
mathematically, but the simulation was done in response to
someone who got beat by a Corvette in just such a manner.
Search the FerrariChat archives back about 10 years or so
ago for the discussion.

2 reasons:1. The bad start you mention eats time, but doesn't affectterminal speed.2. Weight, aero resistance, and power curve characteristicsof your vehicle. For example, a light vehicle with a moderateamount of power (a Lotus 7, for example), willjump off the start and quickly get to a fairly decentvelocity. But it then hits an aerodynamic brick wall anddoesn't gain much additional speed. So it can post a quicktime with low terminal velocity. Heavier cars with a LOT ofpower take a bit of time reaching 60 or so, because ofmomentum and wheel spin. But they have enough powerto not hit that aero brick wall. They just keep accelerating.

I don’t understand the numbers sometimes. I got a VERY bad start…heaps of
wheelspin, but terminal speed was only 4mph less than the 458 even though
elapsed time was over 1 second slower.

can someone explain that to me?

No you miss the whole point of the 458...
Anyone can turn those times, its a video game once you have all electronics
and launch control, no skill other than being able to keep the steering
wheel straight is needed (I bet you could use your right foot only to
achieve this 1/4 mile run...)
I ran my Vette out at a local strip last Fall. Its a 6M, big 305 size rear
tires, 430+hp and lb-ft. Its a bit of a beast and not great for drag strip
work (and I honestly suck at launches)... I spent all not starting in the
13.0's and getting into the upper-mid 12 second range but it required a lot
of concentration and work.
There was a guy who showed in a CLS63 AMG. He ran 12.7 on his first run
12.7 on the second
12.7 on his eighth run...
Guy in a Lexus IS-F ran 12.8's all night long except for 1 run where he ran
a 13.4 (because he wanted to try it without launch control)
To my mind, a waste of time, and honestly the strip is a bit of fun (this
place has $20 run what you brung night)... There was a guy with a Vette
funny car that ran a 8.2 at 172 mph. But of course he did that 1 time and
had to go rebuild the thing for his next run...
No question the paddle shifters are faster, but better? No way.

HAH - is THAT all?
Gimmie that car for a weekend, Enzo - I'll show em.
Yeah,
Just gimmie a weekend - and please, a full tank of gas.
Cheese & crackers all they need is a better driver - -
Yeah - I think I can beat THAT stat.
DOUG
or heck - I can try, oh yeah - heh heh
