I wrote to my friend who worked at Sunset Ford as the
restoration manager. Here's his 2 cents. Of course all of this may
not apply to 308's etc - but I left everything in. Was in many Mustang
mags etc.
Hi, roding out radiators used to be
a common thing, when they were heavy brass. Now days, with thin brass and
aluminum, it is cheaper to just buy a new one, probably made in China.
Dipping cleans OK, but if it is really blocked, it needs roding, to
do it right. When roding out, there is always the chance of developing
leaks on some tube's, which then have to be blocked off. Too many
blocked off tubes can be a problem with over heating. My Model T had an
original core, round tubes, with about half the tubes blocked, still work OK,
as T's were made to run hot, with big bearing clearance. If you have it
dipped, they will paint it with a shinny black paint, better to have it not
painted, and do it your self.

Subject: [Ferrari] end of cleaning of
radiator saga
1981 308 GTSi
I carried my radiator to a shop here in Montreal.
The guy just didn't want to put it in that special liquid they use. I
mentioned at least twice that it was a 30 year-old radiator. He said my
radiator was in good shape and putting it in a liquid would only "weaken" it.
He added the liquid helps if the radiator is very dirty and so on. But if the
radiator is in good shape, the liquid will actually "weaken" the
system.
Has any body ever heard that before ? Is it
possible ?
Can't wait for spring to come along to test
my "new" radiator without the condenser in front.
