Um, No.  But I wouldn’t fathom a guess on the Ferrari’s final value.

I believe that it all depends – it depends on that car’s overall collectability   Is it one of two or three Ferrari types in the world with Pebble Beach or Amelia Island blue ribbon credentials or a little 1979 308 GTS - - - - that was THE very car on show 1 of the Magnum P.I. series.  If so, I would do everything I could to keep the original motor.  Don’t touch.

Those should be preserved in running order.  Unless there is historically reasons and if the original engines are junk, for what ever reason, re-cast ‘em.

Unless Maranello cuts a deal with a Chinese foundry in Xiangshanxizhe, Ningbo City Zhejiang Province, I think I would keep the original motor.

Gordian Knot, eh?

Our F1 TAG Turbo engine has two wins on it both Alain Prost at Imola.  What makes one of the wins a heartbreaker is after winning – he was a few pounds light and DQ’d.  Imagine that. I won’t repaint it or clean it.  It has tags and hand written notes on it that I am trying to preserve – nearly 30years is hard on a Magic Marker.

It is an interesting question isn't it? If the Ferrari factory recasts a motor and builds it in Maranello is the car "less" of a Ferrari than one with the original engine? Its made by the same company (maybe by the same people, I've been to the factory several times and there are some real old timers there), same methods, same alloys; heck a lot of these cars may have had an engine failure early on and had a new engine made under warranty. Ferrari has the same plans and they designed the thing after all.

Is the car less of a car? Its not like the engine was made in China after all. I know that to some people it would matter, to me it doesn't if it is a Ferrari made engine, but what do you guys think?

It apparently isn't even that expensive.  A couple of years
ago, there was a guy on FChat who purchased an otherwise
nice 275GTB that was missing the engine.  He eventually
found the appropriate type of engine, but it needed some
serious work.  The Classiche dept in Maranello (or is that
Milano?  -jk- :) offered to cast and machine a new one,
and much to his surprise, it was cost competitive to buying
and overhauling an old one.  And, yes, the new one got
matching serial #s.
