Sports Illustrated?
Shelby was a ridiculous driver...as CG points out, he raced a lot of different cars, Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc.
He was courted by Enzo for a factory seat but he declined.Remember that drivers back in that era had more engineering skills than the average driver today. So, even if they didn't have an educational background in engineering, they still had to make roadside repairs and adjustments.
Regardless of what contribution he had towards the later products, remember this:
1. He won Le Mans in an Aston Martin
2. He built a car (the Cobra) that
completely dominated US road racing, which at the time was as good as anything in Europe.
3. That car also beat Ferrari twice for the FIA GT World championship (Cobra Daytona coupe) a first for an American manufacturer.
4. He developed the Ford GT into a winning car culminating in 4 straight overall Le Mans wins.
5. He developed the Mustang into a dominating Production car winning against Corvettes, E Types, etc. and competing overseas in Europe.
6. In 1965, the Shelby American team had the SCCA A Prod, B Prod, FIA GT and Le Mans Overall World Champions (Cobra, GT350, Cobra Daytona Coupe, Ford GT respectively)
All this without even mentioning his success in SCCA Trans Am, influence in F1, Can Am, and production road cars, etc.
The guy was a serious legend in
American and International racing. There is no denying that.

Ol Shel and another driver was on an early
sports car mag cover, mid sixties, showing him in the car, shoulders up,
waiting for the green flag. The driver in the fore front â a young
Jim Hall. Ol Shel was in his obligatory bib overalls (Sparco I believe).
Now what was that magazine?

I think I am much more interested now in
his early career. Before reading obits, I had no idea that he had raced Austin
Healeys, Maseratis or Aston Martins or that he had won
Le Mans and raced F1.
How amazing is your car career when none
of that even shows up on most people's radar for your achievements
because what happened later was even MORE significant?

Let's not forget that Shelby
was *also* aligned with manufacturers other than Ford - anyone remember
the " Shelby "
Dodge Omni GLH (and others of its ilk)?
I don't think Shelby was picky about who he worked with, so long as his name was on a product and he got paid for it.
Admittedly, I did not watch these shows, but I really have to wonder about how much of the "go fast" engineering he really did (if any), at least on the later products that bore his name... (or is "none" too obvious???)
FWIW.
