A few years ago I bought some 16" rims and tyres second hand - they had been on a 308gts so the went onto the 308gt4 with no dramas.  The tyres had tons of tread but they were old and hard.  I went to a track day - not a fast circuit and very safe with lots of run-off and so on, so I thought it would be ok at the time, and it was (but probably not recommended and now I would not go on any track with old rubber).

Anyway, on the day my lap times weren't great but I had a ball, slipping and sliding - more like rallycross. Good for the reflexes and car control.

Cheers,

Grahame

Ain’t nothing like tooling down the freeway hitting expansion joints and loosing your fillings because of old tires - - - with (sob) lots of tread left.

One thing I tried with an ancient set of 205/70 14 XWX’s with half the tread left was going to a BIG parking lot and scuttling about trying to spin out and just having a glorious time on old time tires.  Well, before I got kicked out – imagine my disappointment when all I would do is skate of the asphalt twirling about and NOT scrubbing any tire off.  No long black streaks – just some lines where I cleaned the asphalt.

Bowling balls – apt description for the consistency of old rubber.  One for sure – it taught me that if’n I’d REALLY needed to make a sudden vector change – I woulda made ol’ Gabriel laugh.

Got 16” rims and some decent rubber – come to think of it – I got that decent rubber a Loooooohg time ago.  Drat.  There goes my 18 y/o Mac budget again.

Alas

Hey Gang,

A few moments ago, I drove the 308GTB back from the shop, fitted with its new shoes! To tell you how badly it needed tires, the ones we took off were Yokohama A509s! Those went out of production over a decade ago - and they were as hard as bowling balls!

The new Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sports feel great! The fronts are 205/55R16, the rear 225/50R16, mounted on non-ABS 328 16" wheels. Pressures set at 33psi (2.24bar) front, 35psi (2.38bar) rear as per the Owner's Manual specifications for the 328. I thought about using the 308 manual's recommendations, as used for the 14" wheels, but decided to use the specs for the 328.

The goal for this evening and tomorrow is to polish the paint, clean the wheels and detail the interior. The timing is perfect seeing as how I just finished the E-Type detail. Next round will be the Rolls-Royce, putting all collector cars ready for Rui's visit. :-o

It looks like my friend Neil will have his Mondial T back by next weekend too, so right after Rui arrives here in Houston, a bunch of Houston Ferrari owners will hit the weekly Saturday car show together on the 23rd.
