I *think* the first Ferraris I saw "in the flesh" were at a tiny little Euro car dealer in Waltham, MA, just around the corner from where I went to school. They had a black Daytona coupe, a yellow 308GTS (probably a carb'd car at that time), and a small "Red Barchetta" - no, not a 166, I call it that because I don't really know what the model was. 50's vintage, open cockpit, 2 seats (of course), probably a V-12 so not a 500 Mondial, but similar to that. Neat little car. But what really caught our eyes as college kids was the red Countach out front w/ wings, front and rear. Of course, I much prefer the Ferraris these days, but the Countach sure does have a "presence".
First I drove? That's easy. '84 308 GTB QV (if I'd known more at the time, I'd have noted the s/n!). Belonged to a friend of my Dad's. He brought it up one evening and offered to let us take it for a ride. My Dad asked if I could drive it (thanks Dad!!), and the guy said "Sure!" 11 miles of pure bliss - even if I did stall it once or twice. :-) And that stood as the farthest I'd ever driven a Ferrari until I took a road trip from VA to TX with Matt Boyd in his 308. When I took over the wheel, about 10.5 miles down the road I asked if I had to stop now?? Ok, it was funny at the time... Since then, I've been fortunate enough to drive a couple of modern TRs, a 250 SWB, a bunch more 308s (including the ex-Steve Cook 308, which I owned for a time), a championship-winning 348CH (and that one on the track at Watkins Glen - which I found to be totally COOL!), a couple of 355s (thanks to Charles Perry and Dennis Liu for those!), and one 360CH (though just around the paddock for that one). I can't really complain. gp CC: philville [at] dejazzd.com; ferrari [at] ferrarilist.com From: philville [at] windstream.net Subject: Interesting thread, ( no ROL bashing ) Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2012 12:13:39 -0400 To: ygpz4re [at] hotmail.com I t seems like the real enthusiasm is showing through?
Do any of you remember the first Ferrari they saw?
Drove ?
The first I really saw and looked at was a 250 GTO owned by Norman Silver of NC, and being driven in a race by Gordon Tatum at Marlboro.
The first I ever drove was a 250 GTO with Stirling Moss history and owned by a man named Al Garthwaite, the rest is history.
Did you all see the news of Sergio Pininfarinas death this AM.....a sad day.
