I bought my Mulsanne S "on the cheap" for under $10k, just shelled out about that much again on a bare metal respray and recovering the front seats, the wood is not done yet as 5 pieces went back for cosmetic issues, but that bill was $2500 so far.  Probably will have $35k in it to get it to the level that I want, so $45k is not really out of line for a borderline #1/2 car.  Cars really below #3 become "beyond economical sense" and end up getting parted out.  Planning a trip to VA later this year to dig through a yard of 100 of them...

My 308 QV is $28/year, $30 if I skip going to the mall to renew it and handle the transaction through the mail.  I'll take the occasional tornado for no snow in the winter.

Finding a running Bentley or RR "on-the-cheap" is like finding a golden unicorn.  People selling those cars have a certain attitude that makes used Ferrari sellers look somewhat congenial, and rational by comparison.  What's an additional $20K overcharge to your typical status-chasing Blue-Blood?  A weekend of shopping at Barneys NY?  C'mon, folks - do they even read NADA before writing a check for such a car?  NADA is for the "little people", after all....  Don't get me wrong - If somebody 'gifted' me a clean rolling-chassis, I'd stuff a used Ford Cobra motor into it in a heartbeat.  Glass-packs and all.  But I like to daydream.

...and don't get me started about local Govts that charge 'Property Tax' for cars.  Granted, here in MA the Sales Tax for automobiles is capped at $300.  BUT - their sliding-percentage rates for Automotive Property Tax assessment has you paying MORE over your term of ownership than you would have with an up-front Sales Tax charge, yet the Tree Huggers in Beacon Hill wonder why nobody is rushing-out to purchase the latest $35K+ 'green cars'....maybe its because we can do the math.  Good thing my 308 QV is over 25 years old, and according to the state of MA is 'worthless' - my tax on that is only around $150 annually.

Matt,

Can you explain that more. In CA we only pay a state reg fee which is 100$ for the Ferrari and 300 for insurance. The city charges nothing. I pay all my taxes and feel like it is an obligation to be a citizen
but it sounds like you are getting raped!

What Erik's referring to is my 1991 Turbo R that I doubt you could find at a dealer for over $20k.....and my city/locality is assessing its value at $43k and taxing me about $2.5k/year as a result. No recourse for me (I've tried and met with the commissioner of the revenue)....unless I take it to court. And based on VA state law, I'll lose. The only thing I could do is convince NADA.com that they are screwed in the head publishing that a 1991 Turbo R is worth $43k, since the state says if a "recognized published pricing guide" publishes a value, then that is what you assess the car at for tax purposes....

But I digress....

Isn't your county already sticking it to you for your Bentley?  You need to move further off the paved road, some of us are paying a lower percentage than Romey...

I agree that we shouldn't feel sorry for tax cheats at all. I also don't like the equivalent of racial profiling that would cause someone driving a car to be stopped just because they might be wealthy. But maybe that's just me...

PS-As an aside, if anyone is selling a good manual TDI Passat or Jetta at $15k or hopefully way south of that, let me know....

I'm supposed to feel sorry for tax cheats because they used their ill-gotten money to buy a Ferrari?

How about 'NO'...
