What part of Va do you live in?  I'm just South of Richmond --

One of my many problems with tax codes of most countries is the tax assessments based on income -

In my perfect world, there would be one tax rate regardless of amount of income - all would pay this %, capital gains would be either 0% .

It'll never happen of course as politicians like to attack those who are successful way too much.

The things they have done in Italy will have the same/similar unintended consequences the high tax on luxury goods the US put in place back in the 90s - craftsmen who had done beautiful work their whole lives were put out of work and companies that built high end goods went belly up.  The govt "decided" buyers would simply pay the added cost and the govt would be a winner (or is that whinner?)    They (govt) never stop to consider that people who buy high end goods might decide not to buy rather than pay the penalty tax.

There's another kind of person who sometimes buy high end goods - those not so wealth who don't buy mansions, race horses, yachts, etc but manage to save money specifically for a "long lusted after" Italian beauty.   these are the ones who get hit first...

But the wealthy and or successful are easy targets and the politicians will always attack them...

IMNSHO...

What Erik's referring to is my 1991 Turbo R that I doubt you could find at a dealer for over $20k.....and my city/locality is assessing its value at $43k and taxing me about $2.5k/year as a result. No recourse for me (I've tried and met with the commissioner of the revenue)....unless I take it to court. And based on VA state law, I'll lose. The only thing I could do is convince NADA.com that they are screwed in the head publishing that a 1991 Turbo R is worth $43k, since the state says if a "recognized published pricing guide" publishes a value, then that is what you assess the car at for tax purposes....

But I digress....

Isn't your county already sticking it to you for your Bentley?  You need to move further off the paved road, some of us are paying a lower percentage than Romey...

I agree that we shouldn't feel sorry for tax cheats at all. I also don't like the equivalent of racial profiling that would cause someone driving a car to be stopped just because they might be wealthy. But maybe that's just me...

PS-As an aside, if anyone is selling a good manual TDI Passat or Jetta at $15k or hopefully way south of that, let me know....

I'm supposed to feel sorry for tax cheats because they used their ill-gotten money to buy a Ferrari?

How about 'NO'...
