Larry – how long do you want this friend? – oh ignore that – just a rhetorical question ah ah ah

 

Q - Which will appreciate over the next 10 years?

A – Fiberglass 308 GTB

 

Q – How to avoid a serious loss?

A – Buy a Lexus and maybe – just maybe – stay away from 2 valve CIS 308’s as some had factory engine problems, repaired under warranty but by whom.

 

Q – How much to spend?

A – What ever he spends – double it and that will take care of the car plus unknowns – like warming it up in the garage the first week he has it and it drops a valve at idle.

 

Q – carb or CIS?

A – Carb if he likes noises and doesn’t live in a smog check state.  Otherwise he better have Guido in his pocket at smog check time to “tune to pass.”  Tell him a 308 is two four cylinders held together by a common crankshaft and case.  Stock ignition is gets more funner (sic) every year.

 

Thass it – once he marries his new find, there’ll be and adjustment period  (Q3 above) but once sorted out – the car no matter what – a 308 GTB/S is a quintessential Ferrari and is seldom confused for a Camaro or something smacked together from South Korea.

(Yeah, I know we covet Ferraris because we love them, not because we think we'll make money if we ever sell them, but I'm asking for a friend.  Really.)

A friend who is an extremely capable and experienced mechanic asked me which 308s were likely to appreciate over the next 10 years or so.  Not being even remotely competent to answer that question myself, I thought I would pass it along to this list, whose members doubtlessly are better able to intelligently formulate reasonable answers. 

The friend who is asking has a very limited budget, doesn't seem to have performance as high on his list as most would-be owners might, likes old classics, and specifically asked about possible appreciation over something like the next 10 years.  My guess is that he is in fact far less interested in the possibility of making any money, and much more interested in avoiding any serious loss if he were to buy one and sell it in about 10 years (though I am personally inclined to believe that any well maintained 308 is likely to at least hold its value over the next 10 years, assuming one buys it at not too far in excess of the "Clyde" price).

I know the QVs have always been highly regarded, but what do all of you think about specific model years, etc?  European 308 GTBi/GTSi QV?  Relatively rarer fiberglass rather than steel? Injection vs. carburetor?

Any words of wisdom I could pass along to my friend would be greatly appreciated.
