It depends what you want. In some places it is fine (Australia it is better to be American than English in my experience cause the jokes and comments never stop if they think you are from the UK).

If I'm diving and say I live in the UK I get to go on more advanced trips with less hassle than if I say I'm from the states because the experience of divers from the USA (rightly or wrongly) is that they are less hardy and experienced than people that learned to dive in the cold N Atlantic.

In China/HK it didn't seem to matter. In India, being from the "UK" was more helpful as everyone had a cousin in the West Midlands!

In Vietnam our "guide" took us to a few places in Hanoi and later in Saigon that she said "I would never take American tourist to this place". On that trip we were from Europe......

Invariably if you are travelling as a tourist you tend to be treated as the stereotype the person you are dealing with has in mind of your country. This gets really annoying and especially when dealing with people who are trying to sell something can get old quick. Best not to stand out to much. In places like Tunisia, Egypt, ect where I have been many times, I play the UK/Canadian card far quicker than the US card.

If you take a "tour" or a trip organised through another country you see totally different things than if you take one from say the USA or visa verse.

So now  that I have a better idea of how not to appear too American,

Why do I want to do that, ( not appear American) are we really that bad? Or, are we an endangered species?

Thanks for your objectivity

I've lived in the UK for 16 years and can spot an American a mile away now. (I'm a Floridian by birth)Generally they are dressed all the same. If you want to avoid looking like an American drop the ball cap, polo shirts, Dockers, sneakers, and what I call the "JC Penny look". Yes it is easy to be considered a "Canadian" if your accent isn't to strong.... Say "eh" many times and it works better.

Personally I think wearing a ball cap everywhere is the easiest way to look like an American tourist or traveller, they stand out from a mile away.....

All you need to do is

1.  Not wear a blue blazer and khaki pants, and

2.  Tell everyone that you're Canadian. Almost everyone likes Canadians and not many can distinguish between a Canadian accent and an American one.  It helps your story if you can at least name more than three cities and provinces.
