I'm not a speed freak on the streets... Save that for the race cars. So yeah, it was plenty fast enough and a real nice freeway cruiser. In town, the heavy steering was an arm workout at slow speeds. Wing? Absolutely! Gotta have that look!...and some place to set your plate and beer down at car events! I'm not kidding...
I'm from the same town as Don Tognotti (who started the Lamborghini club. My brother lived in Vegas). He joked about me using the wing as a picnic table and that I just needed a table cloth. So I had one made... Betty Crocker (red/white) checkerboard with white fringe, form fitted to the wing. First time I pulled it out I think I saw wine come out his nose! I miss Don.
Great story, Rick.
Did you find the 400S to be fast enough? If its comparable to a 348 in power, that would be pretty good I think.
Wing or no wing is the question, although the wingless look I think is better on this car than the later iterations.

My brother and I owned a white "400 S" early in the 80s. It was a HOOT at first. Driving around the pot-holed roads in Vegas was harsh.... and that's the best word to use with any Lambo,.. Harsh! It road like a truck (or would that be tractor?). But yet, still a lot of fun. When girls knew we had it they always wanted to take the Lambo... the first 2, maybe 3 times... then it was "can we take the Suburban tonight". The Fanny, Foot, Foot entry pattern over the wide sills with the swing up doors also presented a "beaver shot" problem with the ladies... so they didn't like it much after 1 or 2 trips. When I'd take it for trips to LA, the GF having to take everything needed for the weekend in a bag they had to carry on their lap... only made
them hate it more. Just before 40K miles, it started showing the early signs of needing a valve job. We sold it to a young Arab kid who drove it 5 minutes and came back and gave us full price in cash and drove away. We later saw him in one of the casinos and he said he ended up having to spend $35K doing a valve job but he still loved the car and thanked us for selling it to him. He didn't drive it to the show that night because his girlfriend hated it...
Shame Lash sold it.... I'd say no. I think the only thing I enjoyed selling more than the Lambo was our boat! But I met some good people in the Lambo crowd and a few are still close friends today.

The age old debate :
DD QV power or 400/400S purity.
The low body series 1 400S is the most violent looking car out of S'antagata. It's ridiculous how much lower looking it is than a standard CT.
A toughie. :) On Friday, February 22, 2013, LS wrote:

DD is much, much faster and can't be compared to any other Countach in terms of power. A well setup early LP400 is a quick car, but the DD is a monster.
