Hey Hans – I have on good authority the
308 manual was translated by a band of excommunicated Tibetan Monks and typed
up and printed by a small Minnesota
church in their basement. Crude. A lot of stuff happens which may
be missing between the lines. Birdman and I am sure there are others within
our esteemed company who can fill in the blanks, have done this many times and
codified the magic recipe. I’ll bet there are VW tuners who know
this carb quite well too. Therefore I go with the longer version and more
wordy version. I am a killer on Solex PII (both versions) and 3 bbl Zeniths
and Weber’s carbs but these 308 carbs? I don’t trust myself.

Sounds to me like you have a stuck float in a carb, causing starvation.
Remember, the height of the fuel in the float chamber sets the height of the
fuel in the emulsion tubes.
Colin Campbell, in his engine bible "The Sports Car Engine: Its tuning and
modification", says the first thing to check is adequate fuel delivery
rate,
thereby verifying the pump(s) and filters.
Dunno. Just thinking with my fingers.
I did NOT remove the deck lid. I DID hit my head a number of times.
And as
all carb's 308 owners know, its a NASTY fight to remove/install the air
filter element with the deck lid in place!
