Thank you, Clyde.

Well, I suppose that solves the mystery/confusion (except why the vendor said their struts would work -- but I suppose mostly shame on me for not closely examining the assembly beforehand).

So I guess I need to check what I need to tighten, rather than replace, in order to get the front hood to stay up by itself, which it doesn't now.  (Assuming that when it's functioning properly it is supposed to stay up by itself, rather than needing to be propped up by a broom handle, etc.)

The 512 does not have front hood struts.

Thank you.  (Also thanks to S. Sherman for his response.)

I'm guessing that the struts you replaced were not on a 512TR.  But in any case, I just took a closer look at my car, and the struts I bought, and I remain completely confused by the disparity in hardware.  The struts I bought (like the ones pictured in the link I sent, which I guess are what most hood struts look like), which are supposed to work on my car according to the vendor, don't even remotely resemble the supports purchased for my car's hood.  On each side of my hood there are two supporting members, each of which has a rectangular cross section -- no cylinder, at least on the portions (6 inches or so) that are visible.

Could any 512TR owners (Clyde, SJ, ??) take a look at their [front] hood struts and tell me if they're as I described, rather than as pictured?

Check to see that the end hole diameter is the same as the current ones.  I had to slightly enlarge those on the replacements I bought.  Have a pair of heavy duty long nose (needle nose) pliers handy to remove and replace the cotter pins.  I went in through the battery box on the passenger side and found that replacing only that side was sufficient.

Mine didn't work any longer, so bought a set of these:

Although my first impression is that they look much different than the struts now installed in my 1992 512TR, and I'm not known for my mechanical abilities, I'm willing to give the job a try.  But before I do, any tips (other than to find a friend who's experienced and competent to help)?

Thanks,
Larry
