All German dentist rides feel like they have a gearbox out of a tractor. Ferraris may crunch second when cold, but at least you know where the lever needs to go.

BINGO!
So, 87-89s are what we're after?
I've heard the 915s are fragile...then have heard they're not if you use Swepco.
I've driven the 915s and they feel like a tractor's shifter...then again, I like old Borg Warner transmissions that feel like that.
Then again, if I already have the engineering of farm equipment in the garage, why get another car with the same feel?
I really like 930s, but why do they need motor rebuilds after 70k miles?
So confusing...
Someone please explain!

The '87-89 cars had G50s.

LS – ya bring up some valid points. There is a block of Porsche cars to go after for years of fun free driving (and for a tidy little stable investment – do the Carrera or SC) go after these:1 – 1980 thru 89 911 SC’s and Carrera’s (the 78 and 79 SC’s don’t have the TWC and still have an air pump and EGR to meet tough US emissions standards); and,2 – 2010 to 2012 997’s.That’s it. Of course at the other end of the spectrum is 1976 911 with factory thermo reactors still in place. BUWHAhahahahahaDOUGPS – Alas, the pressurized chain tensioner is NOT the answer to the chain tensioner problem. The answer is updating to newer (930.105.509 & 510)Chain wheel supports. From: LS [mailto:lashdeep [at] yahoo.com]

What about the pre '83 cam chain tensioner issues? 915 gearbox industrialism? Now, RMS and IMS?
Great cars, but not for their "engineering".
