Paul,
First, there are six screws... but you are absolutely right: orientation is extremely critical
Second, the float needed to be moved to the other side of the arm to mimic the factory orientation and move freely inside the tank.  Easy job, they just pop off the end.  Move it to the other side snap it back in.
Third, the new sender/switch was moved to my original factory head and stalk assembly then the wires were replaced and extended.  So orientation swing arm to the head was never compromised.

Before I started, I ohm'd out the new sender/switch and the factory sender/switch in full, half and empty conditions.  The values were off by less than 4%.  Not bad over a 300+ ohm swing.  Gauge worked fine and the new sender even provided the low fuel warning light.  Circuit grounds on the head/cap...  one wire is level and the other is low fuel condition.

Sorry, the intermediate pics are not on my flickr site.  But the rest are.

if you really want to see it, the car is six feet behind me as I sit at my garage computer.  I'll pull it out for you but hopefully the pics on Flickr and my description of the work will convince you.

One correction to my previous post, the part was not from ICP but from international-auto.com

Only caveat is to note the orientation when removing the old unit.
I believe there were 5 screws to the unit can be installed in any of
5 positions but only one will allow the float arm to move up/down
freely within the tank.  Elsewise take a photo of the mounted unit
in place.  (hard to believe there is actually a $24 fix)
