For me, one of the stupidest rules is the restriction on testing. This has meant over the last few years that the guys who got it right in pre-season (or at least got it better than the others) are pretty much the ‘locked in concrete’ series winners – ho hum! Yawn! Yes, sure, there’s a bit of incremental improvement here and there, and great driving by Fernando dragging a car further up the standings than it deserves, and if you are an Aussie like I am then it’s fun seeing Daniel bang it on the podium from time to time with his spirited driving. And that’s all very interesting in its own way. But think of the year Button won for Honda/Braun, or the last few Red Bull years, now this Mercedes year – the only time they don’t win is when they themselves screw up! ‘Pardon me, Lewis, did I ram you up the arse? So sorry! Lucky I didn’t hurt MY car, what?’ And so the excitement comes down to – will they prang each other out of a race, and then afterwards, the delightful anticipation of will they biff each other? Unfortunately, this is all so ‘managed’ these days. Bring back the biff, I say! Remember Michael storming across the paddock and down pit lane to have a bit of a chat with Mika after an incident a few years ago?
