If you look at the increases in horsepower and torque with each V8 model from the Mondial / 308 - 328 - 348 - 355 - 360, they were VERY minimal along with minimal increases in performance.  It wasn't until the 430 that Ferrari really broke out and made huge increases in performance across the board.  Now with each new model they are going nuts ...

LS, I know the lineup has gotten soft for the most part but aren't the 360 Challenge Speciale, 430 Scuderia, and 458 Speciale up to par in the visceral feel department?
 
If they are, and Ferrari offered a proper manual or sequential manual (!) option, those cars would be fantastic.
 
I'll settle for that. The no power steering thing I'll have to get through an older car or a Caterham 7.

A friend has a black one with straight pipes and the sound is ridic. A 25 yr old Gallardo owner guessed that it was made in the 70s but who cares what the current generation thinks.

There is nothing outdated about a 512 
It has a cutting edge design recognized the world over and the engine and chassis as well
It came with ABS 
Traction control and stability control can much latter in most every car along with tire pressure monitors 
So you point is?

The profit margins are out the roof on the cars 
Dealer mark up is 15% on every car
And you have to order them!
There are only 23 dealers in the US which is Ferrari's largest market
Used Ferraris one year old damn near bring MSRP 
It's like pouring sand out of shoe with the instructions on the heel !
Dealers buy back used cars from individuals and sell them at premium 
Do I have to go on anymore?

I'm shocked that he said that instead of commenting on the lack of soul in most of their model line.

It's a catch 22.....

You want the PURITY, absolutely.

But at the same time the exotic car business became a business much more than it ever had before. Production numbers all across the board (all manufacturers) are through the roof and the focus on quality and performance #s is also at an all time high. 

I hate to play devil's advocate here, but it might be the choice between "soul-less Ferraris" and extinction. 

A lot less risk taking in the marketplace with regards to styling, and lost in the superior engineering lately is the attention to detail that gave these cars some edge (or maybe the edge has been eliminated intentionally to please "the market"). 

I'm just lucky we grew up when these cars were real fantasies, and they'll always be around in the used market. 

And apparently that might be the cause of the recent upswing in prices for the older Italian exotic. People might finally have gotten the hint......10 years or so ago I'd post up on some of these forums and get laughed at for making these comments and now peeps are agreeing.

Passion Marques are always best under their namesake or founder. The first buyout after usually leaves a generation of virtuous models due to leftover design and technology. They models after that leftover generation start the bad slide...

Who else wonders about what the future holds for Ferrari?  Not just because LdM has left, but also because of the Fiat/Chrysler merger.  Does anyone else think that F/C will destroy the Ferrari name/legacy?  Or does *everyone* else think that?

Jaguar also had a decade or two of floundering when its founder died in the 80's, but lately seems to be making a pretty strong comeback (if you haven't driven the new F-Type, you should - even if I could afford a new Ferrari, I might actually opt for the new F-Type R Coupe - it's a rocket ship!).

Thinking aloud here is all.....
