Sorry to hear you're having trouble getting an answer to your tax question --- 
"Conflicting advice? --  that's the definition of Tax Advice!   When you consider the US Constitution was written on 2 pages and represented the bedrock of this country, while the Tax regulations are approx 74,000 pages now. is it any wonder there are conflicts?  ...

Complexity = infinity.  Getting conflicting info is essentially guaranteed!

I recently found I had underpaid my 2011 taxes.  The IRS was delighted to let me know and the fees and interest piled on while I got the money together.  When I was ready to pay, I called them twice and asked for the balance if I paid by the end of the money.  Both times I was told $3000 and change.  Same answer both times.  2 weeks after I paid I rec'd a check from IRS for $500 and change - no explanation, other than "Tax year 2011".  Then a week later we rec'd another $300 + change.  Again - no explanation, nothing.  Except for the TY 2011....

I wonder if they're going to ask for that $800+ back?   ;-)

They don't know the answer to SIMPLE questions - IMO, there is little hope of getting a definitive answer to a complex question!
