Unless you can confirm 100% that it is a high quality replacement or rebuilt unit, I would rebuild the original.

In fact, as the cars get older and more valuable, I would be inclined to keep the original and rebuild it rather than replacing it.

A used master cylinder? I'm sure you mean a rebuilt one, right? I've rebuilt one before and it isn't bad, in fact kind of rewarding and fun to do it on your own if you have time. But if you're relying on the car for transportation then for sure Clyde is right (if he meant a rebuilt one).
