That's how the the fans worked on a 1981 GTSi
and 1983 308 GTS-QV that I previously owned.

Subject: Re: [Ferrari] 308 fan tech
questions
Here is the way US cars works
One fan one when temp gets to 185
Other fan fan comes on when A/C is turned on regardless if the temp is at
185 or not
This is the standard wiring
This is why I tell everyone if your car starts to over heat I would turn
on the A/C which turns on the other fan

Doesn’t make sense any
other way. Both fans come on when the thermostat on the radiator calls for
cooling.

tech questions
I have my AC empty as I never used it and easier to take
everything apart without draining it and both my fans come on when hot,
no mods on my car early GT4.

I don’t believe you’re
correct.
However, I’ve never
understood why the compressor doesn’t bring on both fans….it could only
help!
It should be the other way
around
In Victory you deserve Champagne
If you obey all the rules
On my 308 both fans
come on from the thermo switch, but just one with the A/C
compressor.
How hot did the car get temp
wise?
If it went to 225 or higher you might have serious
issues down the road
One fan comes on when the thermo switch hits
185
The other fan only comes on when you switch on the
A/C
By pass the circuit and put 12 volts to the
fans
If they spin most likely it a blown
fuse
In early 3 series cars you should change clean the fuse
box yearly
I use to put that stud that comes in the box which
absorbs moisture in my fuse box
And ECU compartment as
well
Also rotate your relays
yearly

After a spirited drive
last weekend, my 85 308 developed a serious overheat problem.
After stopping, I found the fans are not running. Thus, this
weekend will be troubleshooting…
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1)
<!--[endif]-->If I
short the thermostat connector pins, should the fans turn
on?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2)
<!--[endif]-->Do both
fans always operate, or is there a mode where only 1 fan would turn
on?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3)
<!--[endif]-->There are
no other components in the fan circuit, just the fans/thermostat
connection/elect relay – correct?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->4)
<!--[endif]-->Which
relay is the fan relay?
