Both fans always come on when it gets around 195 on
my car (1981 308 GTSi). When I bought it 14 years ago, it had a switch
under the steering column. I can turn them on whenever I want too. I turn them
on when I know I'll get stuck in traffic, or very slow traffic, before it
gets to 195. Plus, I used to have cooling problems too. It used to get to
210-220 often. I took the A/C condenser out (it was useless anyway), took all
the dirt between the condenser and radiator out and there was a lot of it,
cleaned the radiator, straightened out all the little openings (whatever the
name is), I think I counted 780 on both sides. Never had cooling problems
since. It barely goes over 195 in extreme heat here in Montreal.

Subject: Re: [Ferrari] 308 fan tech
questions
I'm not sure about USA or not. My 400i (which, like all of them, was gray
market) had one pusher fan and one puller fan that came on when needed and
then a second puller fan that only came on when the ac was on.
The cooling system worked beautifully and never overheated, even one July
day when the ambient temp was 90F and we were stuck in Manhattan traffic for
an hour trying to get to the NJ Ferrari Festival one time.

Maybe it’s a U.S.A. spec
thing, then….or changed with later cars.
Still doesn’t make much
sense….but sense and Ferrari??
Well that's the way it's
works on every 308 I worked on

If you obey all the rules
I don’t believe you’re
correct.
However, I’ve never
understood why the compressor doesn’t bring on both fans….it could only
help!
It should be the other way
around

If you obey all the rules
On my 308 both fans
come on from the thermo switch, but just one with the A/C
compressor.
How hot did the car get temp
wise?
If it went to 225 or higher you might have serious
issues down the road
One fan comes on when the thermo switch hits
185
The other fan only comes on when you switch on the
A/C
By pass the circuit and put 12 volts to the
fans
If they spin most likely it a blown
fuse
In early 3 series cars you should change clean the
fuse box yearly
I use to put that stud that comes in the box which
absorbs moisture in my fuse box
And ECU compartment as
well
Also rotate your relays
yearly

Hi
Guys
After a spirited drive
last weekend, my 85 308 developed a serious overheat problem.
After stopping, I found the fans are not running. Thus, this
weekend will be troubleshooting…
Can you verify
–
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1)
<!--[endif]-->If I
short the thermostat connector pins, should the fans turn
on?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2)
<!--[endif]-->Do both
fans always operate, or is there a mode where only 1 fan would turn
on?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3)
<!--[endif]-->There
are no other components in the fan circuit, just the fans/thermostat
connection/elect relay – correct?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->4)
<!--[endif]-->Which
relay is the fan relay?
Thanks,
Mark
