Wait... what?....  YOU have govt workers that are actually sometimes in a good mood??  <grin>

Please let us know if your efforts work.   I often swap tractor parts across the boarder and have often felt screwed both by the cost and the resulting impotence of not being able to do a thing about it.    Funny how they put the refund info on the back of the form that get glued to the parcel in question....

I called at least 6 times the 800 number on the Customs form that is glued to the box. I listened to all the options that were given, pushed on a lot of numbers to try to talk to a human. No success.
Then I turned the form over by curiosity and there it is. The back side is actually a Request Form to get a refund if you feel you were unjustly billed.
I also included the Paypal invoice with the right information on. I mailed it yesterday. I'm very anxious to see if the first public servant who reads it is in a good mood ot not.

I once asked about this one time I was at the border crossing. There is a form you can fill out which states the item is going for repairs only and is exempt from duty (just taxes need to be paid).

Unfortunately, I don't know what the form number is...

Canada customs doesn't know what the item is, or what was done to it, they just read the label and treat it as a purchased item.

I don't know how close you are to the border in Quebec, but here in Vancouver, there are many mail forwarding service centres across the line. So much easier and cheaper to just ship and receive across the line, then deal with customs directly in person when crossing back.

I think you had to them indicate it was repaired item to avoid the fee.

Remember my foggy looking glass for the clock ?
Well it's back home now. Total cost $277.50 canadian. Here is the run down:

$26.24 for shipping it to WEST VALLEY (instrument specialists) in California from Montreal.
$182.00 ($140 u.s., exchange rate 1.30, west valley charged me for repair and shipping.
$69.26 Canada customs charged me.
Total $277.50 canadian

I should not be paying customs for an item that was sent for repair. This one I don't understand at all. West Valley put a value of $300 u.s. on the bill for insurance purposes. Then Canada Customs charged me on that value. Ridiculous. I think I'll take my chance and call Canada Customs.
It's one of those things where you say to yourself  'if I had known beforehand, I would have left the foggy glass on. The clock was working and I could see the time anyway. All this because I could not get the stem out myself. I was afraid to break it.

Oh well, the price of owning your Dream Ferrari

P.S.: I hope they didn't break it, I'll have to wait for spring to know. SCARY thought.
