Very true, but in this case, that affects ONE guy. If you're LaFerrari owner #346, you're just smiling because you've got one AND you won't be loosing when you get to move on from it in a few years time (when Ferrari allows you to! ). Owner #499 will still come out of it okay. Unless of course he has a contract or some other guaranty/certificate from Ferrari saying HIS car is definitely the last, then there may be grounds for a lawsuit.

I have Mike Moreton's book on the XJ220... Fascinating story. Mike was the project manager for the 220. There were several key factors at play which forced Jaguar's hand to nix the project. Looking back, it was literally a miracle that car got built at all. I was more of a fan of the XJR-15 but liked the 220 as well. Time has been kind and Don Law Racing in the UK has developed them to the point they are superb supercars. Still great value for what you get.

A lot of collectors buy the first and last of a model, as they have more inherent value then all the others. When your "last" is now second to last that affects value. Not saying it's not going for a great cause, but this has been an issue in the high end collector car world before. Esp with the Jaguar XJ220 - what was promised wasn't delivered ... and lawsuits and returned deposits were the result. The XJ220 is just now coming back in the collector world on value ...

Regardless if it's 499 or 500 (or really, 534...), most of the owners of these cars won't drive them anyways and will make a tidy profit in a few years.

At least in this case, the proceeds are going to something which should help the people who've suffered from that devastating quake.
