I have owned and continued to own at least 12 German cars in the past 15 years. Mostly bmw and most ran over 100k miles BUT after having one major issue on a 2005 5 series I would suggest never owning a German car unless you have a full warranty. My last 2015 5 series and my 2013 X1 have been bullet proof as was my 3 series before that. I do believe the more options, fancy suspension and upgrades you buy the more chance of trouble. And stay away from VW as well.

Here, the Germans are still out performing everyone. In a really bad way...

At least Benz has recently realized that their engineering departments cannot keep up with the rest of the world. They have started buying or copying technology directly from other manufacturers.

So, my criticism may be short lived as soon as they start implementing more outside solutions into their cars.

They should've started about 25 yrs ago before things started going bad.

The man gave us a list of exotics to choose from and it took 4.3 seconds for someone to suggest a soccer mom sedan/station wagon with a dashboard mounted depreciation gauge.

In addition to the McLaren and Lamborghini examples, why not throw in a Bentley Continental GT?

It might not have exceptional handling or braking performance, but it sure as hell is a fast car.

Gas mileage might be s****, but that's about the only knock I have on the car.

BTW, I recently got to ride as a passenger extensively in Queensland, Australia in both a C63s Wagon and a Cayman GT4.....both excellent cars in their own regard. The GT4 on back roads was outstanding, but alas it is the NA flat 6 not the turbo 4. The C63S had an awesome exhaust note, tremendous mid range power, pretty nice interior.

However, as fun as those cars were they weren't the most comfortable in the world, esp. the Porsche (sports seats). But there's a marked difference between being a passenger and driver in those circumstances....

For pure daily usage, gotta figure a 911 carrera or turbo is better than a Cayman.

California T still horrifyingly ugly. No one asked for a Ferrari with a Kardashian ass. Scratch if you can’t stretch to the Portofino.

 

If you’re already going to have a track car, why bother with the GT4? It’s just going to beat you up on the road. A standard Cayman S would be a better daily by far. Also $100k for a four-cylinder turbo? Not me. And by initial estimates, it’s a full second slower to 60 than the new M5. What’s that? My super-impressive Porsche is outdragged by BMW’s executive whale tank?

 

I’m a huge Corvette fan, but I wouldn’t buy such a radically new GM product in its first year of production. Give them a year or so to work through bugs and production engineering.

 

458 seems to be a great car with some collector/appreciation potential as the last of the normally aspirated. Market is flush with them, so there are deals to be had. Not quite sure they’re down at $150 without higher mileage, but if you’re going to daily drive it anyway, then don’t bother wasting money on a low mileage garage queen where you’re going to piss away that extra premium you paid.

 

So I’m in for the 458. If you’re looking for other interesting units in that price range, possibly McLaren MP4-12C or Lamborghini Huracan.
