Stained concrete - - -

Just got back from a big box store – Costco.  As a result of our earlier posts I took notice of their massive floor.  They have the shiniest, smoothest raw concrete floor I have ever seen.  Don’t know what they’ve done or how they treat it but it really looks nice.

Oh ho – NOT concours wow snazzy – but sure practical looking with a hint of Bauhaus – clean, neat, starched.  Definitely says “don’t look at me - - look at what is standing on me.”

On the other hand – I flashed back to 1968 when I used a Cordoba colored Trewax directly on a concrete patio.  Got the idea out of “Sunset Magazine.”  I wore like iron.  No fading, no chipping no scratching.  Just thot of that.  Don’t know if Trewax is still around.

Just some thots –

Doug

I have seen some really nice polished/stained/sealed concrete floors.

One of the MWR facilities at Fort Stewart in Savannah had that done and the floor actually looks like polished copper. It’s striking and highly durable. No idea how much prep is involved, but it came out amazing and must’ve been reasonably priced since that facility always has trouble with funding.

FYI - I did a floor epoxy coating in a fish tank saltwater equipment room, and it only lasted about a year before it started flaking up

I would probably go with tiles, then you can replace them as necessary.  however if you're planning to work on the cars, as I know you do, perhaps just a good old cement floor is the best for finding draft nuts and rolling around on a mechanic's seat

Matt,

If you do a floor coating, I would highly recommend buying ribbed rubber mats for under your cars, or at least your

daily driver.

The mats will collect/hold all of the water, leafs, dirt, etc.. that falls off when parked.  It will save you from puddles of dirty standing water

on your new finished floor.

You can drag the mats outside to clean and hose them off a couple of times a year.

Here's a shot of one of my mats with my old 512 Boxer.

Cheers,

Gary

All,

I'm about to move into a new (well, not brand new) house with a 20'x31' oversized 2 car garage. This is finally my first place where I'll have the place to store my toys and have room to work on them. Please discuss recommendations for garage floor coatings.

I'm leaning towards epoxy because while I could do tiles, the cars WILL leak (1985 Ferrari and 1939 Rolls-Royce are NOT oil tight, in fact the Bijur system on the Rolls is designed to "leak"). I imagine the tiles will leak through and "someday" that entire mess will still be on the concrete beneath.

I'll probably lean towards having a professional do the prep and application because I want to get this done right the first time.

Thoughts? References? I do know how to Google, so I'm really just looking for your personal recommendations.

Thanks

-matt
