I am from that era; saw JM Fangio win Sebring in ' 56. Remember when Pedro
and Ricardo Rodriguez started for Ferrari. As a Floridian, it was easy for
me to go to Cuba; did so several times in the late 50s. Joined the Air
Force and was commissioned in '58, so, I missed the Cuban GP of '59 where
Fangio was kidnapped by Castro and all the great Masseratis crashed and
burned. Really interesting times! Will definitely get the book.

Drivers heads turning to watch a wreck . . . covered quite well in one plate
in Robert Daley's book - "The Cruel Sport." His seminal picture book should
be a part of any GP aficionados library. The coverage is mostly from the
late 50's to early 60's. Between 20 and 30 bucks, used, postpaid, hard
cover from Abebooks.com. so it's used - it's not like George Costanza took
it the WC.

If you have access to the book, look for picture 156. The drivers aren't
named but Ricardo Rodriguez (Ferrari 246P Shark Nose) trailing Phil Hill has
his head screwed left looking at Willy Mairesse's upside down and burning
Ferrari 246P Shark Nose. And Phil Hill, in his 246P Shark Nose, is laser
visioned straight ahead and pulling away. In the movie - Yves Montand plays
the Phil Hill montage about pressing his foot down harder in the wake of a
horrible accident.

Yep, the movie Gran Prix is grand. Skip the saccharin love story and follow
the progress of the movie - it goes from "don't get in our way" to "Hey - I
wanna be in THAT movie - a song sung by the real drivers of the time. And
later - Taa Taaa. See Scott Stoddard drive a real BRM H-16 engined Lotus.
I believe Robert Daley was asked to write the movie but part way through was
bounced. Shot using 50 mm lenses rather than today's wide angles which
"push" a car that is mere inches away from the photo car to yards away. And
the music - Maurice Jarre did a right fine job.

Think I'll dig out my copy. Thank Mike -

Doug

I hate those. RUSH had a lot of them, so did Stallone's movie and most
action modern movies. It all looks so fake, so easy to spot. It's
ridiculous.
There is also a shot of Miles actually turning his head almost backwards in
his cockpit to look at an accident that just happened. No racing driver
turns his head while driving at over 100 mph. Any film maker who wants to
make a racing movie should be forced to watch GRAND PRIX. The 1967 movie by
John Frankenheimer. Not only forced to watch the movie, but also THE MAKING
OF THE MOVIE on the compact disc. They didn't have computers back then.
Still the racing looks so real. Greatest racing movie ever. And, there is a
story to follow. I remember James Garner barely moving his eyes sideways
after seeing an accident, NOT turning his head backwards

If you want the real story, the book GO LIKE HELL by A.J. Baime (ISBN
978-0-618-82219-5) is the book (300 pages) to read. It starts from day one
when FORD decided, after his frustration of not being able to buy Ferrari in
1963, to go all out and BUY Lemans to the 4th win in a row in 1969.

Ken Miles appears a lot in the preview. I hope they do him justice in the
movie because he got screwed big time at the end. He should have won the
1966 race not McLaren/Hulme. He had developed the car, won Daytona and
Sebring. He deserved it.
