I don't text a whole lot, but I do know that the iPhone must have some sort of proprietary format. I can text with most iPhone users (I have a Google Pixel), but I have at least one that simply doesn't receive my texts (and it is too bad because it is an important contact for the purpose of kid school carpool stuff, so we have to email instead). I haven't really looked at why that happens.
