That “dad had that much money in his pocket” scenario was a chicken bone in the throat of Dan Marvin’s racing career.

Seems that there was this kid from Nazareth Pennsylvania.  His Daddy’s name is Mario.

In 1983 Lola would manage to send to the states their one and only gizmo, set of rudipost gears, or muffler bearings and sonny boy, Michael, would get the only set in the world to use for R&D on his Formula Atlantic car.  Results were spectacular.  For the rest of the entrants the races were always for second place.

Then sonny boy graduated to CART and eventually to F1.

Dan then won the Formula Atlantic championship.

Dan was a tremendous fellow to have known.  He brings a smile to my face remembering his quick humor and droll wit.

When it comes to carts and horses (a d a bunch of other things) I usually go with:

“Do you know how you become a millionaire doing XXXXXXX."  [pause for dramatic effect] “You start off as a billionaire!”

On that note, is a fine really a penalty when your dad has that much in his trouser pockets?  And Lance still gets to use the ’stolen’ parts for the rest of the season ?

That's really cool that you had a couple national championships, no small feat!

Ah yesh – auto racing.

In the 1970’s and early 80’s I was a big fish in a small pond – I drove a 912 Porsche.

Did reasonably well garnering two national championships and a bunch of trivets.

At about the same time I managed two Porsche teams – one a 914-6 and the other a Carrera RSR.

Southern Calif – Riverside, Laguna, Willow Springs, Las Vegas.

It was while managing those teams that I ran across Dan Marvin’s log book for his Formula Mondial.

Dan had trailered from Griswold’s in Berkeley to Phoenix on Thursday.  Unloaded and on the warm up lap (usually done at 7/8 speed – some warm up) he hit an oil slick from the car in front of him.  He slew off the track and sheared the right side off his car to include wrecking the block of his new engine.

At the bottom of his page outlining the damage he penned these immortal words:

“This just goes to show you that racing is fun, cheap, and easy.”

That was more than 40 years ago – easy to remember.

Onward

Thanks for the heads up Scottie, sure wish Dennis was still in the group to give some feedback...

And thanks for all the suggestions, I ran a quick ballpark internet performance and cost survey, with these rough results.  Of course it has nothing to do with the handling of the vehicle with just the power to weight ratio and acquisition cost...

Vehicle: bhp/T/$

Ferrari308 134 $$$lots

Miata 152. $15k

Boxster 197. $35k

Cayman 207. $50k

Corvette C7 405. $65k

Radical SR3 406. $25k

food for thought... Not quite sure where I'm headed but it seems like it'll be a fun time....

I agree about the cheap car.  For straight up fun, Miata.  Easy to own, cheap to repair and the SPECMiata class SCCA has a giant schedule and always plenty of competition.

Something bad happened to Dennis in the Radical.  Don’t remember if it was failure or crash, but the car was smashed.  Dennis was bruised but otherwise fine.  Until then, everything Dennis had posted about the car was praise.

I don’t know if he’s still lurking here, but Dennis Liu has a Radical. I haven’t got to drive it yet, but he says it’s pretty spectacular, although a little brutal on the body to drive. Some tracks require arm straps, which makes it difficult to give point bys (although there may not be many of those once you get to know the car J).

I don’t know your skill level or history, but most instructors and programs say that you’ll learn a lot more a lot more quickly by buying a car that has lower power and fewer driver’s aids – Miata, E36 M3, Boxster/Cayman. When I started to get into track events seriously I started shopping for a 987.2 Cayman. It got some modifications that make it more track appropriate versus the earlier 987. Cheap to buy and to run. Some tracks have restrictions against convertibles that don’t have hardtops or cages, which is why it makes more sense than a Boxster.

For better or worse, while shopping for the Cayman I took out a Corvette C7-Z06. Fell hard for it and bought it as my track car. I’ve been running it for about 2.5 years now and absolutely love it. It needed a few minor mods for track reliability, but it will run away from almost any street car except GT Porsches. You could save a bunch of money buying a Grand Sport, which gives you all the track goodies without the supercharger. Exceptional performer for the money.

Anything that gets you on the track is a good choice! Good luck.

After an awesome track experience, I've decided to retire my 308 from the racetrack, but still have the bug!

I was thinking about a Boxster track car and then local Ferrari guru suggested either a Radical or Stohr dedicated track car...

Do you guys have any experience with either of those, or others?

From the web info, both look awesome....490bhp/ton, 0-60 3.5sec, etc....

Thanks!

Mark
