I removed the base when I did mine.  It wasn't difficult at all.  Just
have to have the right tools.

And, Peter, yes.  Getting gasket material down in that hole had me
very concerned.  So I stuck my finger in the hole and went at the old
gasket with a putty knife/scraper.  By the time I was done, my finger
looked like hamburger - but no gasket material was lost.  Maybe a bit
of blood mixed with the oil, but, hey it's an Italian car.  Probably
came from the factory with remnants of some of the assembly workers
cuts also.
