The idea was that the 365 engine would be the ultimate choice and with reasonable compression rates, re-ground cams and six carbs, you’d end up with a comfortable 400HP and over 400Lb-ft of torque. And how much does a typical 308 make? On a good day, driving downhill? The power generated by this conversion could easily overcome any weight gain from the extra four cylinders and wider tires. Interestingly, the only modification for the cooling system he suggested was recoring the rad with a thicker core (and reusing the original tanks). This may add an extra liter to the system (and with my GT4’s pushing close to 24 liters of coolant, that’s almost Kenworth quantity).

Since this conversion was done back in the mid eighties, you’d end up with a car generating as much power as the contemporary 288 GTO for a fraction of the cost. Almost a no-brainer.

A lot has happened since then and this V-8 has evolved to the point where one can use, more-or-less, off-the-shelf parts from a newer V-8 model (a 430 engine has the same bore spacing and main bearings of a 308!) , get close to that power level, run smoother and without all of the custom machining and welding work (and there’s tons of welding required to the transaxle case to accept the V-12 block and transmission input shaft). A no-brainer today.

Where do you guys think the 110 or so lbs weight loss came from?

The Columbo V12 is huge and there is a lot of extra weight in fluids over the stock V8.

I am guessing there were plenty of items that were left off after the conversion like cats, mufflers, airbox, etc.

The larger wheels and tires also added bulk although Bob Bondurant tested the car at Sears Point with favorable chassis feedback.

Matt B, Peter R, or any of you 308 experts with insight on this?

I have a copy of that 308 V12 conversion manual.

It was feasible back then as the donor V-12 engines were “reasonably” priced. Now though, it wouldn’t make sense. There was a Daytona V-12 engine for sale on Hemmings a few months ago – used as a display piece, so who knows why it was taken out of a car – and they were asking  $110K...

Although, it’s a great reference for the process and could be adapted using a modern 12 (like from a 456 or 550).

The hot rod BB reminded me of this car.

I hadn’t read the article in years...

400hp and they kept the weight down to 3140 lbs.
