Well... we ran TransAM for a bit and that's the pro side of SCCA, does that count as "professional"?

The logical thought on this is that track cars are run harder... and they are.  Street cars are not driven as hard.  Gotta be the better choice... right?  But consider this:
  • A well managed track/race car is warmed up and monitored well prior to and during a practice, qualifying, race or just test session.  Maintenance is weekly/monthly... based on hours vs. being fit in around budget/kids/calendar/wife (or whatever)/office.
  • Many street cars are started, taken out of the garage still cold and driven to the store, meetings, dates, dinners, etc.  Cooled down, restarted and driven home.  Those miles are hard on motors, brakes, gaskets and bearings.
This above scenario goes double on anything with forced induction.

I think that track car vs. non-track car is not able to be boiled down just history, but the "how" of the usage by the owner.  Get to know the owners and it will tell you more about the car than it's physical history.   A few cocktails or bottles of wine make great lubricants for truth... if you (or your friend) ask the proper questions.

For example, if you had two very well-maintained cars of the same make/model/mileage/options, both were track prepped (but street-legal), but one had been on the track a lot but the other had seen no track time.

Asking for a friend (really, that's a true statement, I'm asking for a friend). :)
