It was never an issue.  Maybe just a little stiff, but not at all
difficult.  Was using Redline synthetic gear oil with a bit of
friction modifier for the limited slip diff.

What I did on my downhill trek from my house was to immediately put it
in 2nd after backing out of the driveway, at which point it was
already pointed downhill.  So straight from reverse to 2nd.  At the
stop sign at the bottom, it was still pointed downward enough that I
didn't need 1st and left it in 2nd for the next couple of miles.  Then
all was good.
