The inlet pipes break through a central chamber. The exhaust pipes are also inside the chamber. Also inside this chamber is a screen/mesh and some insulation. The exhaust seems to take the path of least resistance.

Might make a difference with muffler brand. I had an aftermarket Ansa that had exhaust pulses on both sides at idle, but was much stronger on one side. Being curious, I plugged one side and it didn't seem cause any misfire. I suspect mine were kinda sorta separate, but with some internal connection.

Are the mufflers of a design that combines the 2 banks into 1 or do they exit each side separately.  On US with 4 exhaust tips should you feel the same pulsations on both sides?
