I just recently drove an R1 RX7 and it was superb.

So light and tossable…great power too.

I always like the Z for GT duties and the MR2 Turbo was pretty cool too.

The MitsuChrysler had some amazing tech for the time with the Active Aero.

That’s the thing, all of these Japanese sports cars gave the high-end Euro cars a run for their money. The 300ZX Turbo is evenly matched to my Mondial’s HP output, giving near identical 0-60 times. Contemporary reports showed the Mondi had the top end covered (approx. 155 to 160MPH), but the Z wasn’t that far off – probably limited for liability reasons, but I’m sure it was capable, even if it would be strained. I remember the car magazines had centerfold posters which had a prime spot on my bedroom wall growing up. I still have the original brochure I got from our local dealer in Montreal (in English!), which was so beautifully printed. It had see-through pages that high-lighted the engine, suspension and chassis which overlaid action-shot pictures of the car. The detail was excellent.

The FD was another dream car as it looked so damn good. Too bad the rotary’s complexity and short life span killed any wide-spread popularity. The Achilles’ Heel was the vacuum-controlled sequential turbo set-up which made diagnosing costly (on par with Ferrari in that department!). It’s no wonder a lot of cars got LS swaps in most recent times. My neighbor’s kid had an FD which he put a monster turbo on it and ran it a our local drag strip. Turned in amazing times. Not sure how long it lasted after that...

That was the “Junior Supercar Era”…truly awesome.

The excitement and build up of the 1990 300ZX was amazing.

The early ads only teased the headlights and when it appeared, it was as good as Star Wars.

The FD RX7 was a masterpiece!

I love this era of Japanese cars as they were heavily influenced by the Star Wars spaceship design style. I love that yours is in silver, which looks the best. There were lots of brown ones.

My first car was an ’88 Mitsubishi Colt and it was all straight lines (the only curves was the steering wheel and the front wheel wells. Even the rear wheel openings were squared off at the tops)... It was great fun to drive. I don’t think any of them survived.

Yup. We still have my dad’s Mitsubishi 3000GT-VR4 which was part of that generation of Japanese performance car. Outstanding machine. We also used to have its twin, the Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo that was my mom’s.

I am also partial to the 2+2. This is my 1983 Datsun/Nissan 280ZX 2+2. I owned its twin in high school, sold it, regretted it, and then bought this one a few years back for less than the cost of parts for a 30K service on the TR.  😊

It was what was available and he wanted to get one before prices starting getting really out of hand.

His ideal example would be a 2+2 Turbo. I’d go for a 2+2 as well (although not a Turbo) as I find the shape looks better with the longer wheelbase.

We both grew up during this era of cars and naturally we’re both drawn to them. I remember when they came out and just fell in love with the design and the advanced spec, as it was a radical departure from the previous generation. It still looks great and modern today.

Loved that generation of 300ZX. Is he regretting not getting the Turbo?  😊

The foreman is back from holidays and with another crew member taking time off, I volunteered to take his place.

Is it wrong as a subordinate to drive a more valuable car than your boss?

It’s an interesting comparison because these two cars are pretty evenly matched performance wise. Doesn’t matter, we’re both having fun...
